If you’re a loyal customer of famed coffee chains like Starbucks, one of the questions that will be posed to you by the barista would be whether you’d want to extra toppings to go with your beverage.
A netizen who is believed to be a barista at the coffee chain has stirred the anger of Malaysians after he boastfully declared that he knew how to choose ‘stupid’ customers and coax them into having add-ons.
M’sian barista calls customers ‘stupid’
The controversy all began with a simple tweet from a netizen who complained about how Starbucks had become more “cunning” with its tactics in getting customers to have extra toppings.
In the tweet, he gave two examples of how certain sentences were used by staff to “trick” customers such as “Single or double cheese?” and “Would you mind a stronger coffee?” as most would not know the underlying meaning.
The tweet was later retweeted by another netizen, who wrote: “As a barista myself, I know how to choose some ‘stupid’ customers and push add-ons.”
Slammed for rude remark
Not surprisingly, netizens were riled up by the barista’s remark and roundly criticised him for it.
One netizen tagged Starbucks Malaysia in the tweet, calling on the company to look into the incident and questioned whether such remarks were part of its values.
Starbucks Malaysia responds
In response to WeirdKaya’s enquiries, a representative from Starbucks Malaysia said that an internal investigation found that the netizen is no longer working for the company.
The representative also added that the former barista only worked for three days at back in 2021.
