Elmiza explained that she was about to buy some bread when a staff member approached her and asked her to leave.

“They told me to leave even though I had already picked up my bread. They said there was a no-entry sign, but it only showed a picture of a baby stroller, not a wheelchair,” Elmiza said.

“They were worried the wheels might bring in dirt or even faeces.”

Elmiza expressed her frustration, pointing out that even mosques allow wheelchairs, and she was simply there to buy bread, not to ask for charity.

Bakery owner apologised

As the story spread on social media, the bakery, responded with an apology on their Facebook page.

“I sincerely apologise for what happened to the woman in the wheelchair who was not allowed into our shop,” the owner wrote.

They explained that the shop’s policy of removing shoes before entry had unfortunately extended to wheelchairs because of previous incidents with dirty wheels.

However, the owner admitted that this was a mistake, especially considering that their own father is disabled and their mother uses a wheelchair. “I’m not as heartless as people think. I made a mistake, and I’m owning up to it,” they added.

The bakery ended by thanking the public for pointing out the issue and promised that this would not happen again.
