A social media firestorm has ignited over a bakery chain’s policy against Christmas greetings on cakes.
A famous bakery shop in Malaysia, faced intense scrutiny after an internal memo surfaced online.
The memo explicitly prohibited the inscription of “Merry Christmas” on cakes, a decision that many online criticized for being discriminatory.
The memo dated 14 Dec 2023 states that for the upcoming Christmas Festival Celebration, they are strictly not allowed to write the words “Merry Christmas” or “X’Mas” on any cakes, even if requested by the customer.
Instead, staff may use a provided “Season’s greeting” wishes card topper to be placed on the cakes.
According to reports, the operations manager explained the policy was in line with Jakim’s guidelines. The bakery feared losing their halal certification if they did not comply.
JAKIM clarifies halal rules
JAKIM has posted a Facebook post addressing the viral issue regarding the prohibition of ‘Merry Christmas’ on cakes.
JAKIM reiterated that there are no obstacles for holders of the Malaysian Halal Certification (SPHM) to write any form of celebratory messages on cakes or similar items.
JAKIM advises all SPHM holders to consult with Jakim or the relevant Islamic Religious Department if there is any confusion regarding Malaysian halal certification.
