Malaysian badminton legend Lee Chong Wei has officially been awarded the prestigious title Datuk Seri by the Penang state government in recognition of his outstanding contribution to sports and the country.
The title comes with the Darjah Gemilang Pangkuan Negeri (DGPN), one of the highest state honours, and was conferred by Penang Governor Tun Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Ramli Ngah Talib during the official investiture ceremony held today in conjunction with the Governor’s 84th birthday.
In a touching social media post following the ceremony, Lee expressed deep gratitude for the recognition.
He shared that although he’s retired from competitive badminton, the spirit of Malaysia — and especially Penang — continues to live in him wherever he goes.
He also emphasised that the honour wasn’t his alone, but belongs to everyone who has supported him throughout his journey.
Chong Wei previously received the title Datuk in 2008 following his silver medal win at the Beijing Olympics. With this latest award, his title is now officially elevated to Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei.
Throughout his illustrious career, Chong Wei made history as Malaysia’s most accomplished shuttler, having spent 348 weeks as World No. 1, winning 69 international titles, and bagging three Olympic silver medals.
Despite stepping away from the court, he continues to contribute to the nation’s sports scene by mentoring young athletes and advocating for wider sports development in Malaysia.
For many Malaysians, Lee’s journey is not just about winning — it’s about perseverance, national pride, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
Congratulations, Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei!
