A pickup truck with an extra fuel tank was found at a petrol station by Penang Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry officers, suspected of petrol smuggling.
The truck contained 750 liters of petrol valued at RM1570.50, with the total confiscated items worth RM37,337.50.
One suspect was arrested
According to Sinchew, during an operation at 9:15 PM in Seberang Perai, officers noticed the pickup refueling “abnormally” with RON95 petrol.
A local driver, about 35 years old, was detained. Items seized included a Toyota Hilux, the extra fuel tank, three sales receipts, and a mobile phone.
The pickup was in the process of refueling with RON95 petrol when the officers arrived at the scene.
Further investigation is ongoing
The Ministry is investigating under Section 112 of the Supply Act 1961 to determine if an individual, company, or supply chain is involved.
First-time offenders can face fines up to RM2 million, while repeat offenders may be fined up to RM5 million. Individuals can face fines up to RM1 million, three years imprisonment, or both for first-time offenses, and up to RM3 million, five years imprisonment, or both for repeat offenses.
The Ministry emphasized ongoing monitoring to curb smuggling of regulated goods and subsidized diesel.
