Driving can be stressful anywhere, but navigating foreign roads adds a whole new level of anxiety.
According to a global survey, Malaysia has been ranked as the second scariest Southeast Asian country to drive in and 10th in the world overall, with a scare score of 6.70 out of 10.

Tourists feel most nervous driving in these countries
The survey, which involved over 2,000 motorists worldwide, asked respondents to rate how nervous they’d feel driving in different countries on a scale from 1 (not nervous at all) to 10 (extremely nervous).
The results revealed the top 10 scariest nations to drive in, based on average scores.

In Southeast Asia, only Thailand scored higher than Malaysia, landing 5th globally with a score of 6.86.
What makes driving abroad so intimidating?
According to the survey, here are the top reasons why tourists feel uneasy about driving in another country:
- Driving on the opposite side of the road (56.2%)
- Dangerous driving by other motorists (55.9%)
- Accidentally breaking a road law (52.7%)
- Unfamiliar road layouts (48.1%)
- Not understanding road signs (43.1%)
Other reasons include concerns about vehicle theft, language barriers in case of an accident or police stop, and encountering unexpected road conditions.
