M’sia Has One Of The World’s Fastest Passport Processing Times, Immigration Dept Claims

Aside from fast processing, Malaysia’s passport is also among the most powerful in the world.
Malaysia’s passport is not only among the strongest in the world, but also one of the fastest to be produced.

In a recent post on X, the Immigration Department said Malaysia is among the countries with the fastest passport production time globally, with passports able to be completed in as early as one hour.

From weeks to just one hour

According to an infographic shared by the department, Malaysia’s passport processing system has undergone a major transformation over the decades.

From 1960 to 1980, passport applications were fully manual and could take around two to four weeks to complete.

By 1990, the process improved to about seven to 14 days as the system became more organised.

Between 1998 and 2009, Malaysia began using biometric passports, cutting the processing time to around one to three days.

The department also highlighted that on Feb 1, 2007, the Immigration Office at Wangsa Maju was able to process passports within one hour, marking a major milestone in the country’s passport digitalisation efforts.

Since 2009, the one hour passport processing time has been expanded across Malaysia.

Faster than several other countries

The Immigration Department also compared Malaysia’s passport processing time with several other countries.

According to the infographic, Malaysia’s passport can be processed in as early as one hour, while Singapore takes around three to seven working days.

The United Kingdom takes around three to 10 weeks, the United States around six to 10 weeks, Australia around six weeks, India around two to six weeks, and Canada around 10 to 20 working days.

However, the one hour timeframe is stated as “as early as”, meaning it may still depend on factors such as the application type, documents submitted, branch capacity, and whether the application requires further checks.

Malaysia also ranked 6th in passport power

Aside from fast processing, Malaysia’s passport is also among the most powerful in the world.

According to the 2026 Henley Passport Index update, Malaysia is ranked 6th globally, sharing the spot with Hungary, Poland, and the United Kingdom. Malaysian passport holders have access to 183 destinations without needing a prior visa.

The Henley Passport Index ranks 199 passports based on how many destinations their holders can access without a prior visa, using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Singapore currently tops the 2026 ranking, with visa free access to 192 destinations. Japan, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates are ranked second, with access to 187 destinations.

Meanwhile, Passport Index by Arton Capital ranks the Malaysian passport even higher, placing it at 3rd globally with a mobility score of 174.

A small win for Malaysians

For Malaysians who have had to renew their passports before a last minute trip, the one hour processing time is definitely something worth appreciating.

Of course, it is still best not to leave passport renewals to the very last minute.

But compared to countries where applicants may need to wait for weeks, Malaysians can say this is one queue that moves surprisingly fast.
