MELAKA – A woman and her boyfriend pleaded guilty to causing hurt to their five-year-old daughter at the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court today (Aug 25).
Tan Meei Yun, 30, and Chua Wai Hon, 38, admitted to the charge before Judge Maziah Joary Mohd Tajudin after it was read out to them by the court interpreter.
However, they will know their fate at a later date pending the facts of the case.
The duo was accused of exposing the victim to danger, resulting in injuries at a house in Bandar Hilir at 11.30 am on August 14.
They were charged under Section 31 (1) and Section 34 of the Child Act 2001, which carries imprisonment not exceeding ten years or a fine of up to RM20,000 or both if convicted.
The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Anis Wahidah Mohamad while the accused were unrepresented.
The pair also appealed for their bail to be reduced as they were unemployed throughout the Movement Control Order (MCO).
Judge Maziah Joary granted bail at RM5,000 each and barred them from approaching the victim.
The court also set September 29 for the mentioning of facts and sentencing of the pair aside from reporting at the nearby police station.
On August 15, Sinar Harian reported that police had rescued a five-year-old girl from being abused by her mother and boyfriend after receiving a tip-off from the public.
Head of the Melaka Criminal Investigation Department, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Sukri Kaman said the child was believed to be physically abused with a belt and punches.
