The abolishment of UPSR and PT3 examinations was a deliberate move to address academic stress among students and reduce the risk of suicides, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek told the Dewan Rakyat this morning.
Responding to a query from Tan Kar Hing (Harapan-Gopeng) during Dewan Rakyat regarding recent student suicide cases, some of which were attributed to stressful school curriculums, Fadhlina underscored the ministry’s commitment to reforming the education system.
“This was why the ministry had taken the step to abolish examinations, so that there will be no more exam-based learning,” she said.
Move away from exam-oriented learning
Instead of traditional exam-focused teaching methods, Fadhlina explained that the new approach emphasizes inquiry, exploration, experiential learning, contextual studies, and alternative assessments.
“The goal is to move away from exam-oriented learning and provide a more balanced, student-centric educational ecosystem,” she added.
The move is part of a broader strategy to create a learning environment that prioritizes students’ mental health and holistic development, as the ministry continues to refine its methods to ensure the well-being and success of young learners.
