A young man who tried to take his own life by leaping off the Penang Bridge was rescued by passersby who stepped in time to pull him back.
According to China Press, the incident took place at 2am this morning at about 8 kilometers on the bridge’s direction heading towards Butterworth from the island.
Saved by those who passed by
The Chinese daily reported that the man was a 22-year-old Orang Asli man who hailed from Kelantan.
Eyewitness said they saw him standing on the edge of the bridge and was about to jump into the sea when members of the public quickly rushed over and pulled him to safety.

An emergency call was made to the Perak Road Fire and Rescue Department at 2.20am and a team was immediately dispatched to the scene.
Upon their arrival at 2.32am, they found that the man had already been rescued but was in emotional distress. The firefighters then worked together with the public in calming the man down.

Police later arrived and took over the case, where the man was brought to the police station for further investigation.
The rescue operation came to a close at 2.54am.
