Sometimes it can be hard to remember that our parents mean well for us, especially when they place (extremely) high expectations on us.
An anonymous Twitter user recently shared his frustration about his parents’ desire for him to purchase a Honda car, despite his meagre monthly income of RM1,500.
Pressured into buying Honda with RM1,500 salary
In the tweet, the netizen wrote that his mother was a housewife while his father isn’t working ever since he fell sick. As such, both of them relied on him and his siblings for money.
However, it seemed that their version of being “successful” was purchasing a brand new Honda car and constantly asked their son when he was getting one.
“I only earn RM1,500 a month and I told them that I couldn’t afford it even though they told me it’s a dream car.
However, they kept badgering me with questions such as ‘When are you getting a Honda?’ and constantly compare me with others who have made it in life.
Towards the end of the post, the netizen wrote that he hopes his parents will offer support and encouragement by saying they will pray that he gets a better job so that he could afford a Honda.

‘You do you!’
The tweet has since garnered more than 970,000 views and 1,600 likes at the time of writing, where netizens were largely sympathetic to the man’s plight.
One wrote that he didn’t understand the obsession surrounding Honda cars which has been passed down through multiple generations.
Another advised the man to go at his own pace, especially if there was a sharp difference in financial and career views between him and his parents.
Another suggested a rather drastic method, writing: “From now until December 2023, give less than half of what you usually give them. When they ask about the amount, tell them you’re saving up for a Honda. God willing, they would stop talking about Honda by August.”
