Malaysia has made history at one of the world’s most prestigious mathematics competitions, proving that our young talents can hold their own against the best globally.
Ranked 19th among 117 countries
Team Malaysia finished joint 19th at the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2026), held in Shanghai, China, from July 10 to 21.
This marks the first time Malaysia has broken into the global top 20 at the competition.
The six students earned a combined score of 142 points, surpassing the previous national record of 139 points set in 2025. Malaysia shared the 19th position with Bulgaria and Germany, according to the official IMO results.
The team brought home one gold medal, three silver medals, one bronze medal and one Honourable Mention.
Malaysia’s seventh IMO gold medal
Ho Janson led the team’s impressive performance by securing a gold medal, marking Malaysia’s seventh gold in the country’s IMO history.

Tan Rui Xuen and Chia Ming Han made their IMO debut this year and managed to win silver medals on their very first attempt.
Education Minister congratulates team
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek congratulated the students for their outstanding achievement, describing the result as a proud moment for Malaysia.
She highlighted that the team’s 19th place finish was Malaysia’s best performance in the competition to date.
