Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysian Badminton team took off to Vantaa, Finland, yesterday (21 September) for the upcoming Sudirman Cup.
The 2021 Sudirman Cup will be starting in less than a week on 26 September 2021.
The squad
A total of 30 Malaysian delegations were sent to Vantaa. The team consists of 20 players and 10 supporting staff, including coaches.
All 30 delegations were tested negative for Covid-19 before departure.
Men’s doubles player Aaron Chia Teng Fong enlighten fans as he posted several group pictures on his Instagram story.
Meanwhile, his doubles partner Soh Wooi Yik shared an Instagram story of himself dining with with Men’s single player Lee Zii Jia when they landed in Qatar.
Women’s doubles player Pearly Tan expressed her excitement to participate in her first Sudirman Cup.

Sudirman Cup 2021
This year, the Malaysia badminton team will be led by England Open champion Lee Zii Jia and Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik.
The Malaysia badminton squad will compete in Group D against Japan, England, and Egypt.
It is speculated that the competition among eighth-seeded Malaysia, second-seeded Japan, and tenth-seeded England in group D will be very intense.
Malaysia will be facing England on the first day of the Sudirman Cup on 27 September 2021.
Sudirman Cup is a mixed team badminton championship the takes place every two years.
The championship requires each country to compete as a team. They will compete in men and women’s singles, men and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.
To advance, each country will need to accumulate 3 wins out of 5 of the matches played.
Looking back, Malaysia’s national team only succeeded into the semi-finals once during the 2009 Sudirman Cup in China.
Let’s hope the team would bring home our first-ever Sudirman champion this year!
