A man’s attempt to fill his belly with alcohol and food with a lost debit card backfired on him after he got caught in the act by the victim.
The accused, Ee Cha Seng, later pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal misappropriation before magistrate Kartini Kasran.
Victim notified of transactions
According to the facts of the case, the victim was notified of two unauthorised transactions totalling RM30 and RM63.90 respectively being made on his debit card via his bank app.
Upon receiving the notifications, the victim tried searching for his wallet but couldn’t find it, leading him to believe it had been lost, reported Harian Metro.
When the victim went to lodge a police report, he received another notification informing him that another transaction was attempted at a fast-food restaurant along Jalan Bakri in Johor.
However, the transaction failed due to insufficient funds.
Using the given information, the victim headed over to the fast-food restaurant and saw Ee using his debit card.
Further investigation revealed that Ee had used the debit card to buy six cans of beer at a convenience store on Jalan Ali earlier.
Had just left prison 2 months ago
NST reported that Ee had a total of 29 prior records and had just been freed from prison two months earlier following a drug conviction.
He pleaded guilty to two charges framed under Section 403 of the Penal Code, which provides up to five years’ imprisonment, whipping, and a fine for each offence.
Ee was sentenced to six months’ jail, one stroke of the rotan and a RM1,000 fine for each charge.
In default of payment, an additional two months’ imprisonment was imposed, bringing Ee’s total sentence to 12 months’ imprisonment and two cane strokes.
