Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng has called for the reintroduction of caning in Malaysian schools as part of three immediate steps to strengthen student safety, following a series of tragic incidents involving students across the country.
According to a post on his Facebook page, Lim said these incidents have created a crisis reflecting the failure of schools to guarantee the basic safety of Malaysian children.

1. Reintroduce caning in schools, with safeguards
Lim proposed that caning be reinstated as a disciplinary measure, but only under strict supervision and with proper safeguards in place.
He suggested that teachers assigned to carry out caning should undergo regular psychological evaluations to ensure both student and teacher well-being.
Caning was effective during our school days when none of these tragic incidents occurred. Spare the rod, spoil the child,” he said in his post.
Lim added that when implemented responsibly, caning could help restore discipline and reduce violent behaviour among students.
2. Install CCTVs in over 10,000 schools nationwide
The DAP lawmaker also called on the government to approve emergency funds to install CCTV cameras in more than 10,000 public schools across Malaysia.

While the project might cost billions of ringgit, Lim said it was an investment parents would readily support.
No one would compromise on the safety of their children,” he wrote, stressing that surveillance can help prevent and monitor cases of bullying or abuse in schools.
3. Establish nationwide anti-bullying and anti-sexual harassment system
Lim’s third proposal is to introduce a comprehensive support system against bullying and sexual harassment in schools.

He recommended increased patrols, regular engagement between teachers, parents, and students, and more effective mechanisms to detect, report, and address misconduct.
Lim also urged the Ministry of Education (MOE) to act firmly against any school management that fails to protect students or respond properly to reports of abuse.
We can only honour the victims by ensuring such tragedies never happen again. Never ever forget, and never ever again.
Lim concluded that student safety should be treated as a top national priority and that the government must act swiftly to create safer school environments rather than waiting for more lives to be lost.
