Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh is calling on everyone to take a moment and celebrate the amazing achievement of Lee Zii Jia, who won a bronze medal in men’s singles badminton at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Let Zii Jia celebrate Olympic Bronze win in peace
Instead of focusing on any past issues, Hannah wants us to appreciate this incredible victory.
Lee Zii Jia, who is ranked seventh in the world, has made Malaysia proud by bringing home the country’s second medal from the Olympics.
Celebrating Lee Zii Jia our second bronze medallist for Paris 2024!, Hannah exclaimed.
‘Discussions about him being a free player can wait‘
She encouraged everyone to set aside any discussions about his status with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) and his decision to go independent.
“Discussion on being with the association vs being independent can wait for another day. For now, let’s just celebrate this win.
Yes, there’s been history with BAM, yes he was briefly in RTG and then he decided otherwise and now he is fully independent but can we as a nation just pause for now and celebrate the fact that this young man has come a long way, picked himself up and now made it to the Olympics podium?
Lee Zii Jia’s road to the bronze medal was nothing short of exciting. In the bronze medal match at Porte de La Chapelle Arena, he faced India’s Lakshya Sen.
Despite losing the first set 13-21, Lee bounced back to win the next two sets 21-16 and 21-11, securing Malaysia’s second medal in Paris.
Hannah also praised Lee’s coach, Wong Tat Meng, for his crucial role in guiding Lee to success.
“Well done to his coach Wong Tat Meng for helping Zii Jia make it this far,” she said.
“For now, go out there and celebrate this win Zii Jia. Congratulations and well done!”, she concluded.
