Lee Chong Wei Take BAM Position With No Salary, Attracts Criticism From Ex-Olympian Who Says He’s ‘Not Suitable’

"People will always talk, but I do not mind. My focus is helping the players and moving BAM forward.”
Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei has returned to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) as the Chairman of its Performance Committee.

He will not receive any salary for the job, and says he accepted the role out of passion and gratitude, according to Harian Metro.

Lee will oversee player development and preparations for major tournaments such as the Olympics and the Thomas Cup.

No salary. I just want to help Malaysian badminton progress. BAM supported me for 19 years. Now it is my turn to give back,” he said.

Razif Sidek disagrees with appointment

However, former Olympian Datuk Razif Sidek has openly questioned the decision. He believes BAM should choose someone with stronger management experience.

I feel it is not quite suitable. The chairman position should be given to someone more mature and experienced in management and athlete life,” he said in an interview with Astro Arena.

Razif, who won Malaysia’s first Olympic badminton medal in 1992, also said there are other individuals who may be more qualified for the role.

Lee says he will focus on the players

Lee responded by saying he is not bothered by criticism and only wants to help Malaysian badminton improve.

People will always talk, but I do not mind. My focus is helping the players and moving BAM forward.”

He added that he prefers to work quietly behind the scenes, guiding and sharing his experience with national players.

No one can succeed alone. If we want Malaysia to rise again as a badminton powerhouse, we must work together as one.”

BAM President Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz confirmed Lee’s unpaid appointment as part of ongoing efforts to rebuild Malaysia’s performance on the world stage.
