Kota Kinabalu has always been a haven for nature lovers, drawing tourists from around the world with its stunning natural landscapes.
But lately, there’s a problem that’s tarnishing its beauty: litter.
Especially during holidays, popular spots like Segama Waterfront and Taman Awam Teluk Likas are being overwhelmed with trash left by visitors.

It’s really disheartening to see such neglect ruining the scenic views we’re famous for.
Seeing our city’s beauty compromised like this has sparked a strong response on social media, with locals sharing countless photos and videos of the mess.

Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) has stepped up, rolling out immediate clean-up efforts, collecting around 200 kilograms of discarded waste and placing additional trash bins to encourage better disposal habits.
They’ve launched two major clean-up operations, Ops Payung, enforcing Anti-Litter laws at the worst-hit areas.
From the start of the year to April 2024, they’ve handed out fines left and right — 64 at Taman Awam Teluk Likas alone, and another 214 in other parts of the city.
And this week, they even had to take action against illegal hawkers, seizing goods from those flouting the rules.
