KL is well known not only among locals, but foreigners as well for its vibrant and bustling pace of life that continues to draw thousands of people over.
Recently, the capital city was named in the ‘World’s 100 Best Cities’ list produced by Resonance Consultancy, a Canadian tourism and real estate advisory.
KL 50th best city in the world
According to the list, only cities that are located within regions with populations of 1 million or more are selected.
After that, they are ranked based on three categories: livability’ (which includes stuff like air quality, rent prices, green spaces), ‘loveability’ (nightlife, restaurants, social media engagement), and ‘prosperity’ (rates of unemployment, educational attainment, GDP per capita).Â
So how did Malaysia fare and what was Resonance Consultancy’s description of it?
According to the list, Malaysia was ranked smack right in the middle of the list at 50th place and seen as a magnet of global talent thanks to its “booming financial and tech sectors”.
KL’s many infrastructures were also highlighted, with Merdeka 118 getting a special mention:
The city made global news in 2024 with the opening of the second tallest building in the world after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The 118-story Merdeka 118 Tower boasts luxury accommodations and an observation deck offering breathtaking views of the city.
“KL is also a multiculturalism dynamo, and the city’s rich mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian influences serve up a vibrant food scene, with street food like nasi lemak and char kway teow coexisting alongside world-class dining options.
“This diversity extends to the city’s thriving hospitality sector, with the opening of the Bukit Bintang City Centre—a sprawling mixed-use development featuring high-end retail, hotels and entertainment venues— in 2022, and the Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur in 2025,” read the description.
Other Asian cities also made it into the list, such as Tokyo (#4), Singapore (#5), Seoul (#16), and Bangkok (#32).
