TASEK GELUGOR – “I’m off to capture lizards.” “I want to buy groceries in Kedah because the rice is better there.”
These are just some of the excuses given by four of the 17 individuals who were apprehended by police at Kampung Selamat while attempting to cross into Kedah yesterday (May 23).
According to the Malaysia Gazette, a team from the Seberang Perai Utara District Police Headquarters (SPU) launched a surprise operation at an illegal route near the Padang Serai border at 4 pm.
SPU District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Noorzainy Mohd Noor said the operation also led to discovering of three illegal routes near Padang Serai, Kedah.
“A total of 17 individuals were arrested during the operation where some crossed into Kedah from Penang and vice versa.”
“Many gave invalid reasons to travel interstate, with one claiming that the rice in Kedah was tastier,” he said.
Noorzainy added that four men were ordered to take the lizards they had caught back to Sungai Petani.
Each of the individuals was slapped with an RM5,000 compound for violating interstate travel SOPs without official permission.
