The two heroic search and rescue dogs from the Fire and Rescue Department’s K9 unit, which played a crucial role in the Batang Kali campsite landslide incident two years ago, have been deployed in the search and rescue operation for an Indian tourist who fell into a pit.
According to Sin Chew Daily, the two “heroic” search dogs, Frankie and Dente, were brought to the scene of the incident on Jalan Masjid India around 5 PM yesterday to participate in the rescue operation.
Specialize in locating victim
The rescue dogs and their handlers conducted a search at the site for about 10 to 15 minutes.
The Fire and Rescue Department had already deployed the two search dogs on the evening of the 23rd to assist in the operation.
Whenever there is a landslide or collapse incident, the department mobilizes search and rescue dogs from its K9 unit to participate in the operations.
These trained dogs are not only capable of locating survivors but also of finding the bodies of victims.
Sent to Türkiye for rescue mission in February
According to reports, the two search dogs involved in this operation were also sent to Türkiye in February this year to participate in a special 14-day earthquake rescue mission. The earthquake in Türkiye at that time resulted in the loss of approximately 50,000 lives.
In addition, during the Batang Kali campsite landslide incident two years ago, the Fire and Rescue Department deployed six search and rescue dogs, which helped recover the bodies of the victims.
At that time, the then Minister of Housing and Local Government, Nga Kor Ming, awarded honorary medals to the six outstanding search and rescue dogs, two of which are now participating in the current rescue operation.
