The viral “RM1,260 seafood dinner at a JB roadside stall” incident that got netizens and enforcement authorities talking is back in the spotlight.
Particularly, the “4 bowls of white rice for RM40” part had many saying it’s way over the top.
Now, the stall owner is setting the record straight with a clearer handwritten bill.
In a Facebook video, the stall owner laid out the menu details of the complainant’s meal that day.
She emphasized that the table hosted about 20 people and the pricing for the white rice was per portion, not per bowl.
Detailing prices of all dishes
Highlighting their order details, she explained that they had 4 portions of white rice, 3 vegetable dishes, 3 grilled fishes, 2 flavored stone fishes, 1 steamed stone fish, 3 butter prawns, a fried squid dish, 1 chili crab, 1 salted egg yolk crab, 5 omelets, a pack of conches, drinks, and otak-otak.
Doing the math, the “4 portions of white rice” cost RM40, meaning RM10 per portion serving 5 people.
The 6 fish dishes were broken down as 3 grilled fish dishes costing RM162, 2 flavored stone fish dishes costing RM96, and a steamed stone fish for RM48.
“In the video, you mentioned two fish, but there were actually six servings,” said the vendor.
Their bill’s priciest dish was the 3 portions of butter prawns at RM224. Other dishes such as the fried squid, chili and salted egg yolk crabs, veggies, omelets, conches, and drinks added to the total.
In a twist, the stall owner extended an offer to meet Malay singer Mavi and his wife, Ekin Cahaya, who had initially complained about the shocking bill.
Customers said there were only 16 of them
According to mStar, contrary to the restaurant owner’s claims that there were 20 people, Ekin stated that there were only 16 attendees.
“There were not 20 of us, just 16 in total. This count includes an infant and four children.” she told mStar.
