In Malaysia, we are known to be a country that embodies the spirit of multiculturalism through the many languages and dialects we are able to speak in a single sentence.
This is also reflected in the billboards across the country, where multiple languages are put on display. However, the Kedah state government is working to ensure that one particular language is shown at all times.
Jawi script to be made compulsory for billboards in Kedah
According to a report by NST, the Kedah state government is currently looking into making every billboard in the state display Jawi script.
When contacted by the English daily, State Committee for Local Government and Health chairman Mansor Zakaria confirmed it, adding that Jawi script will be made mandatory as the second script, after the Roman alphabet, on all billboards and signboards.

He added that other languages can be used as a third script on the billboards.
According to the proposal, we will ban billboards from displaying images or visuals that are offensive, inciteful, racist, or feature dangerous weapons.
“Eye-catching images of women on billboards will also be prohibited, ” he said.

Mansor explained the proposal is part of the state government’s efforts to elevate the use of Jawi, which is in tandem with the local ordinance encouraging the use of Jawi script.
He added that the state government will be working with local authorities to enforce the use of Jawi script on billboards and signboards across the state.
