Japanese Woman Leaves High-Paying Job With 30% Tax In Japan, Finds Peace Earning Less In M’sia

Malaysia gave her what Japan didn’t, her life back.
If you’ve ever sat at your desk wondering, “Is this really worth it?” you’re not alone.

A Japanese woman found herself asking the same question. But instead of just pushing through the burnout, she did something bold: she packed her bags and moved to Malaysia.

And no, it wasn’t for the money.

In a now-viral TikTok video shared on @racewonderland, the woman revealed that she actually prefers working in Malaysia over Japan, even though the pay is significantly lower.

Salaries in Malaysia are definitely lower than in Japan. But for me, that’s okay,” she shared.

So what made her choose Malaysia? The answer is simple. She finally has something her job in Japan couldn’t give her; free time after work and a more relaxed lifestyle.

Late nights, no holidays, and feeling stuck

Her decision becomes clearer when you understand what she left behind.

While many Malaysians dream of working in Japan, the woman pointed out that it’s not as glamorous as it seems.

Japan’s intense work culture often means late nights, minimal leave, and rigid routines. Over time, it wore her down.

Even the high salary that attracted so many wasn’t enough to justify the mental toll.

Many Malaysians say salaries in Japan are very high. That’s true, but what they don’t know is that the actual take-home pay is low because taxes go up to 30 percent,” she said.

“So every time I received my salary in Japan, I felt sad.”

In Malaysia, life feels lighter

That shift in mindset eventually brought her here to Malaysia, where she found a better balance between work and life.

By comparison, she says the balance between income and cost of living in Malaysia feels more manageable, and she appreciates having the time and energy to enjoy life outside of her job.

Her story struck a chord with many Malaysians online, especially those who’ve experienced burnout themselves or are rethinking their own definition of success.

So while some may still chase the paycheck, she chose peace.
And honestly, we get it.
