A Japanese traveller thought she was just helping someone out at the airport.
But after posting about it online, she quickly realised that her “good deed” could have put her in serious trouble.
Helped carry 4kg of another person’s items
According to a post shared on X, the traveller said she was at Kansai Airport when she met a Malaysian woman whose luggage had exceeded the allowed check in weight.
The woman was reportedly supposed to check in 15kg of luggage, but her bag weighed 19kg instead.
To avoid paying an extra 12,000 yen, the traveller said she helped by putting 4kg of the woman’s belongings into her own pink bag.
At the time, she admitted that she did have one worrying thought.
“What if there were drugs or something in there and I get arrested?” she wrote.
Still, she said she decided to help because she hoped someone would also help her if she was ever in trouble.

Quickly got warned by others
The post later drew concern from other users, with many warning her that carrying another person’s belongings at an airport is extremely risky.
Some pointed out that she would have no way of knowing what was actually inside the items she accepted.
Others also reminded her that drug offences can be very serious in many countries, including Malaysia.
She later admitted it was dangerous
After receiving the warnings, the traveller admitted that she had done “something absolutely crazy” and thanked others for pointing out how risky it was.
She said the woman appeared to be genuinely in trouble, and that nothing happened only because she was lucky.
The traveller also clarified that her flight was bound for Incheon, South Korea, and not Malaysia. However, she acknowledged that carrying items from someone else without knowing what was inside could still get a traveller into trouble.
She added that she travels overseas often and would not do it again.
Following the backlash, she later posted an apology, saying her “crisis management was too careless” and that her actions were reckless.
She thanked others again for warning her, saying she now understood that what she did was “a very dangerous act”.
She also urged others not to imitate what she did.
A reminder for all travellers
Helping someone avoid an overweight luggage fee may seem harmless at first, but once the items are in your bag, you are the one responsible for them.
So the safest rule is simple. Do not carry anything for a stranger at the airport, no matter how pitiful the situation seems.
