While it’s common knowledge that smoking causes irreparable damage to one’s health, there are many who still smoke heavily with no care for their personal wellbeing.
A mall in KL took the bold step of placing cigarettes at a section that usually sells items meant only for non-Muslims, a move which won them praise for their efforts to deter more Malaysians from smoking.
Isetan KLCC puts cigarettes at ‘non-halal’ section, wins praise
The incident was first brought to light in a tweet by a netizen named @AmirulWan76, who wrote the following last Saturday (Sept 21):
In other news, Isetan KLCC placed cigarettes at the ‘non-halal’ section. Based.

In the post, he uploaded a photo of a female staff manning the liquor section of a store within the mall, where rows of cigarette boxes were lined up neatly in a rack behind her.
For the uninitiated, the word ‘based’ is a Gen-Z slang that is used to indicate approval or agreement for one’s opinion on a certain matter.
Netizens showered words of praise for Isetan KLCC, with a majority of them commending the mall for making the move to put cigarettes alongside ‘non-halal’ items such as alcohol and pork in an attempt to warn the public about the health hazards posed by smoking.
‘I hope all supermarkets start doing this soon!’

‘Finally, Isetan is also teaching Malaysians (the dangers of smoking).’

‘Why is it so hard for Malaysians to accept the fact that cigarettes are haram (illegal)! It’s as illegal as eating pork or drinking alcohol.’
