For one gardener in Melaka, finding a gold bracelet worth around RM15,000 while doing his morning cleaning did not mean an unexpected payday.
Instead, 28-year-old Tengku Andy Asmawi Tengku Ahamad, affectionately known as Awie, immediately handed it over to staff at Muzium Samudera in Banda Hilir so it could be returned to its rightful owner.
According to Malaysia Gazette, Awie discovered the bracelet at around 7am while sweeping dry leaves near a tree at the tourist attraction.
‘I want to earn an honest living’
The bracelet, described as a 25g “gelang emas jagung”, was estimated to be worth more than RM15,000.
Awie said keeping it never crossed his mind.
He explained that he wanted to earn an honest living for his wife and two children and believed the jewellery likely belonged to a visitor who had accidentally dropped it.
Awie had only been working as a gardener at the museum for around two months after moving from Kemaman, Terengganu to Melaka.
He reportedly made the move so he could live closer to his wife and their two children, aged three years and three months.
Owner eventually traced
The bracelet was handed to another employee before being kept safely by the museum.
A few days later, the museum received a call from a visitor from Kuala Lumpur who said she had lost a gold bracelet during her visit.
Before returning it, staff asked the claimant to provide details and a photo showing the bracelet being worn to verify that she was the actual owner.
Once the information matched, arrangements were made for the jewellery to be returned.
The Melaka Museum Corporation said honesty and trustworthiness are values emphasised among its staff, particularly when handling belongings accidentally left behind by visitors.
Awie’s simple decision ultimately earned praise online, but to him, it was simply about not taking something that did not belong to him.
