It’s a general rule of thumb that whenever one sees an ambulance pulling up close from behind, drivers should give way to them as they are fighting against time to save a patient’s life.
However, there are still some drivers who persist in their selfishness and refuse to give way to ambulances, such as this Toyota Hilux.
Hilux blocks ambulance on highway from Muar to PJ
In a 51-second video posted by St John Muar Ambulance on TikTok yesterday (Jan 15), it showed an ambulance travelling along a relatively clear highway before it was blocked by a Hilux.
In the caption, it stated that the ambulance was transporting a semi-critical patient from Muar, Johor, to Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM) in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
It also stated that the siren wasn’t turned on as they wanted the patient to be at ease and not be stressed out.
“The Hilux suddenly moved into our lane located on the right despite the fact that it wasn’t overtaking any cars in the middle lane.
“We then gave the Hilux some time to be aware of our presence, to the point where we were forced to sound the air horn,” the caption reads.
Despite the ambulance using the siren for a brief moment, the Hilux continued to block its path and only gave way when the ambulance sounded its siren for a longer period of time, causing it to lose 36 seconds of precious time.
To add insult to injury, a group of three young men seated inside the Hilux allegedly laughed at the ambulance when the emergency vehicle overtook them.
Netizens outraged
The clip, which has been viewed more than 180,000 times, saw netizens expressing anger over the Hilux’s selfish behavior in the comment section.
‘Don’t send this kind of people (to the hospital) with an ambulance when he’s sick. Use a horse cart instead.’
‘Siren or no siren give way la (to the) ambulance. Mangkuk (idiot).’
On the other hand, some expressed confusion over what to do if they were to encounter an ambulance right behind them without its siren turned on.
They also said that the ambulance should sound the siren so that drivers would be aware.
