A secondary school teacher in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, has come under fire for an insensitive comment directed at a student who missed an exam due to her father’s critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Family’s Painful Experience
The incident came to light when the student’s sister, known as @dnaaazmr on TikTok, shared the ordeal online.
According to her, the student had submitted a written explanation for being absent on 12 November, citing her father’s hospitalisation in the ICU.
However, the response from the school’s Senior Assistant for Student Affairs (PK HEM) was both unexpected and hurtful.
The teacher reportedly said: “Has your father passed away yet? If not, why couldn’t you attend the exam?”
This remark deeply upset the family, with the sister describing it as an insult that added to their emotional burden during an already challenging time.
Viral Outrage
The TikTok post quickly went viral—now deleted—drawing widespread criticism from netizens who condemned the teacher’s lack of empathy.
According to Oh My Media, many expressed solidarity with the family, calling for accountability and sensitivity from educators in dealing with such situations.
Despite the backlash, the sister clarified that the purpose of her post was not to garner sympathy but to encourage the teacher to reflect on their actions and issue an apology.
Teacher Apologises and Resolves Issue
In a follow-up post, the sister revealed that the teacher had since apologised to the family and had even planned to visit the father in the hospital.
She also urged others who had shared the viral video to remove it, stating that the issue had been resolved amicably.
