Local standup comedian Harith Iskander and his wife Dr Jezamine Lim are officially no longer a married couple.
This comes after Harith uttered the “talak satu” (divorce proclamation) during a closed door proceeding at the Lower Syariah Court in Kuala Lumpur today at about 12.05pm, reported The Star.
Harith Iskander officially divorced from wife of 14 years
According to Datuk Akberdin Abdul Kader, a lawyer representing both Harith and Jezamine, he said the duo decided to go their separate ways on amicable terms due to “irreconcilable differences”.
He added that the couple requested the divorce proceedings to take place behind closed doors.
As the two of them are public figures, they do not want to share their marital woes with the public.
Following the completion of divorce proceedings, Akberdin told reporters that mutual divorce application was allowed by the court, adding that a second application regarding child support was also “settled amicably”.
However, he said the applicating regarding child custody (hadhanah) is still pending endorsement from the Syariah High Court, where it’s expected to be heard next week.
When met by reporters outside the courtroom, Jezamine said she and Harith were “in a better place now”, adding that her now ex-husband was still “her best friend” and that she is still managing his career.
News of an impending divorce first rumbled in early July, where Jezamine headed to the Shariah Lower Court in Kuala Lumpur to file divorce proceedings.
An exclusive interview with The Rakyat Post later shed more light on the couple’s marital woes, where Harith admitted to doing “stupid things that many men do”.
The couple, who have been married for 14 years, have three children: Zander Xayne (14), Alessandra Jayne (11) and Zydane Zayne (nine).
