In a series of recent developments, Grab, the ride-hailing giant, has proffered an apology relating to the controversial incident at a petrol station in Johor Bahru, which garnered substantial attention on social media platforms.
To recap, the incident saw a Grab delivery partner involved in a dispute with an individual, alleged to be Singaporean, over purchasing RON95 petrol in Johor Bahru. Following the altercation, the delivery partner claimed that his Grab account was abruptly suspended without any clarification from the company, causing public furor.
Consequently, Grab addressed the matter via a statement on their official Twitter account at midnight on 23 June 2023:

In their official statement, Grab elucidated that the delivery partner was engaged in a delivery task when he halted at the petrol station for refuelling and became entangled in the contentious incident with the alleged Singaporean individual.
Following the event, Grab started receiving public reports linked to public safety concerns. In accordance with their established code of conduct, the company took a precautionary step to temporarily suspend the rider’s account pending an investigation.
Upon the investigation’s conclusion, the company reinstated the rider’s account.
Netizens were still unhappy
Nonetheless, the firm continues to face public discontent.
The situation sparked public outcry, with numerous individuals expressing their dissatisfaction towards Grab’s actions and threatening to boycott the application if the rider’s account was not reinstated.

A recurring complaint was that Grab’s mode of releasing their statement – through an Instagram story followed by a couple of tweet screenshots – was perceived as informal and lacked sincerity.

Many netizens have voiced their displeasure, arguing that Grab’s action is unjust. They underscored the principle of “innocent until proven guilty,” expressing dissatisfaction with how the situation was handled which adversely affected the driver’s only source of income.
