Transport Minister Anthony Loke has proposed that Malaysians present their MyKad when purchasing subsidized RON95 petrol.
This initiative aims to ensure that only eligible citizens benefit from the subsidies, excluding foreigners from accessing the discounted fuel.
Insert Mykad like Bonus Card
According to Malaysiakini, he targeted subsidy mechanism for RON95 is currently under review and is expected to roll out by mid-2025. According to Loke, the use of MyKad would function similarly to swiping a credit card or BonusLink card at petrol stations.
“When you go to the petrol station, just like inserting a credit card or BonusLink card, you simply insert your MyKad for the subsidized price to appear,” Loke explained.
This announcement follows Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s statement during the presentation of the 2025 Budget.
Ensure 85% of Malaysians receive benefits
Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, highlighted the introduction of targeted subsidies to address the current system’s inefficiencies.
He noted that the current subsidies benefit wealthy individuals and foreigners, which dilutes the intended impact for everyday Malaysians.
With the new subsidy mechanism, Anwar emphasized that the funds would be better allocated to ensure 85% of Malaysians receive direct benefits. This targeted approach aligns with the government’s broader goal of making subsidies more effective and equitable.
Further details of the implementation plan are still under discussion, with the government aiming to refine the process in the coming months.
