Many often have the perception that high-end restaurants would pay their staff lucrative salaries due to its opulent menu and ambience.
However, that couldn’t be further from the truth after it was revealed that the newly opened Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill at Sunway Resort pays its staff a paltry RM1,500 wage.
How much does it cost?
The matter was first brought to light on Tuesday (Oct 11) in a tweet by Jam Lim, the former editor of Tech Wire Asia.
In the tweet, she included a TikTok video by @ivor_sianz, who went to the Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill at Sunway Resort to try out its menu.
According to the video, one slice of beef wellington costs RM300, mashed potatoes for RM40, and most shockingly, RM36 for a bottle of water.
Paying peanuts
You’d think that with such sky-high prices, the staff would be wallowing in cash every single month.
Unfortunately, Jam went on to reveal how much the upscale restaurant actually pays its workers.
In two job postings uploaded by the restaurant on JOBLUM, it showed that a hostess only gets paid between RM1,500 – RM2,100, whereas a sous chef was paid between RM5,500 – RM7,700.
This obviously didn’t sit well with Jam, who called the wages “exploitative”.
The Gordon Ramsay restaurant in Malaysia charges RM300 per SLICE of beef Wellington, RM40 for mashed potatoes, and RM36/bottle of water but pays his waitstaff RM1.5k, sous chef RM5.5-7k only. Exploiting third world country labour, much?
To further put things into perspective, she wrote that five slices of beef wellington totaled up to RM1,500, which was the minimum monthly wage for a waiter.

Outrage among netizens
The tweet has since blown up online, where it garnered more than 13k likes and 12k retweets at the time of writing.
Many netizens were outraged by the salaries given and agreed that it was a form of exploitation.
They also expressed shock over how much customers were charged for certain items such as the bottle of water.
Some also blamed Gordon Ramsay for allowing such exploitation to take place, however one netizen pointed out that it was Sunway Resort’s fault as the Michelin-star chef merely paid to have his name displayed on the restaurant and didn’t manage it.
