“Give students high quality phones”, Syed Saddiq tells government after one catches fire

Malaysia's hottest phone. Literally.

Throughout the Movement Control Order (MCO) that began last year, students have been depending on smartphones to attend online classes.

To help them in this aspect, especially those from the Bottom 40 (B40) group, the government has provided smartphones for them so that they won’t be left behind.

However, one student alleged that his/her phone caught fire while attending an online class, less than a month after receiving it from the government.

“Luckily, I was at home. Or else it might set the house on fire!”

The student also tagged the mobile company YES in the caption, urging them to be responsible in giving out smartphones to needy students.

Muar MP Syed Saddiq shared the post on his Facebook page and criticised the government for providing poor quality smartphones.

“They have the funds to invest in high quality smartphones.”

“Students need it to use other applications such as Google Meet, Telegram, YouTube, and Zoom for their online classes. How can smartphones of such low quality help them?” he wrote.

This comes after Syed Saddiq slammed the government’s reason for giving poor quality smartphones in a tweet on Monday (June 14), saying that “preventing students from playing mobile games with their smartphones” was a poor excuse.
