A Malaysian driver recently shared a shocking experience after claiming that their car’s fuel tank kept overflowing despite releasing the pump handle and relying on the auto-stop function.
According to the driver, the incident happened when the petrol pump failed to stop even after the tank was full, causing petrol to spray out uncontrollably.
‘We were afraid that it would explode!
They share that the entire car was soaked in petrol while they scrambled to hit the emergency stop button.
We were so afraid it would ignite and explode!”

When the driver reported the issue to the staff, they were told it wasn’t a pump malfunction but allegedly a design issue with certain Perodua cars.
In fact, they were informed that other Perodua owners had faced similar problems, with petrol overflowing because the fuel system didn’t trigger the automatic shut-off properly.
The driver also expressed frustration as the excess petrol cost had to be borne by them, with no refund provided despite it not being their fault.
Never experienced anything like this
Speaking to WeirdKaya, the driver shared that they always leave the fuel pump on auto-stop to fill up the tank and have never encountered this issue before.
They also shared that they filed a complaint via email but have not received a reply yet.
The driver also emphasized that pressing the emergency stop button is very important, as it is usually a red button located at the middle of the machine.
Netizens’ comments
Many netizens chipped in and shared their experiences with similar situations.
‘After experiencing it once, I never fill the tank completely anymore. Plus, after reading up, filling the tank to the brim actually consumes more fuel. You can just stop at around 70%.’

‘I’m scared this kind of thing will happen, so I always press the pump manually for a long time.’

‘I’ve tried it too, also with a Perodua. It’s obviously an issue with their fuel handle.’
