Whenever one’s in need of immediate medical attention, an ambulance will be called to the scene to transport the person to the nearest hospital.
A foreign woman recently expressed her shock over being charged an astronomical amount for an ambulance ride that spanned 10km in Kuala Lumpur, leading her to wonder whether it was justifiable.
Was charged RM1,656 for 10km ambulance ride
According to the post which has been making rounds on social media, the woman wrote that she had gone to a private hospital in KL for treatment on Sept 12, 2024.
After two hours, she was transferred to a government hospital which was located 10km away via an ambulance.

To her immense shock, she was charged a whopping RM1,656 for the ambulance ride alone, leading her to jokingly wonder whether a Rolls-Royce was used to send her to the hospital.
While her medical treatment and medication costed close to RM332, the woman said she had no issues with it but still couldn’t get over the fact that she had to fork out RM1,656 for the ambulance ride.

‘It’s no ordinary vehicle’
In the comment section, netizens offered a few possible reasons as to why the 10km ambulance ride was so expensive.
‘An ambulance isn’t an ordinary car. Inside it, there’s medication, emergency treatment and medical staff on standby. On top of that, there’s also equipment to provide oxygen for the patient etc.’

‘It’s expensive because you took an ambulance from a private hospital. If you departed from a government hospital, it would’ve been cheaper.’

‘Previously, I was charged over RM400 for an ambulance for this distance. I nearly fainted when I saw the bill.’
