A Bangladeshi petrol station worker in Kuala Lumpur was fined RM10,000 after he admitted to using two other people’s MyKad to purchase subsidised RON95 petrol under the BUDI MADANI RON95 (BUDI95) scheme.
According to Sinar Harian, 50-year-old Md Jakir Hossain pleaded guilty to two charges before Magistrate Aina Azahra Arifin on Tuesday.
The court also ordered him to serve 14 months in jail if he fails to pay the fine.
Used 2 MyKads belonging to others
Md Jakir was accused of possessing and using two MyKad belonging to a 25-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman without valid permission or reason to purchase subsidised petrol.
The offences were committed at a petrol station along Jalan Pahang between Feb 8 and Apr 22.
He was charged under Regulation 25(1)(o) of the National Registration Regulations 1990, which carries a maximum fine of RM20,000, up to three years’ jail, or both upon conviction.
Victims reportedly lost BUDI95 quota
During proceedings, deputy public prosecutor urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence, saying the victims had suffered losses involving their subsidised petrol quota.
“The accused had the option to return the identity cards but continued purchasing petrol despite knowing the MyKad did not belong to him,” he said.
Meanwhile, defence lawyer Carmen Low appealed for a lower fine, saying her client needed to support his family and had shown remorse for his actions.
One of the victims, who is also an accountant, reportedly suspected her MyKad had gone missing and was being misused to purchase subsidised petrol without her consent.
Following checks on CCTV footage, authorities managed to arrest the accused. A search of his rented room later uncovered the two victims’ MyKad.
