Last Friday (Dec 20), the Malaysian football team went goalless against Singapore during the quarter-finals of the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup, which saw Harimau Malaya getting eliminated as a result.
Following the loss, fans of the national team have engaged in unsportsmanlike behaviour, triggering backlash from Singaporeans.
Football fans hold SG flag upside down over elimination
In a photo that has been circulating wildly on Facebook, it showed a group of men, believed to be supporters of the Malaysian football team, posing for a photo while holding the Singaporean flag upside down — which is a blatant display of disrespect.

In another photo which was originally posted on TikTok but later found its way to Reddit, showed another group of football fans looking straight into the camera and holding the Singaporean flag in an inverted position.
Several of them were also seen flashing their middle finger while posing with the upside-down flag.

Criticised by netizens for uncouth behaviour
Needless to say, the “sore loser” mentality and lack of sportsmanship displayed by the fans riled many Singaporeans up, who slammed them for resorting to such disrespectful actions to vent their frustrations.

Many also expressed amazement over how a football match could bring out the worst in fans of the Malaysian football team, with one saying that it made them look “dumb and ignorant”.

Aside from holding the Singaporean flag upside down, fans also took out their frustrations by causing a ruckus at the Bandar Tasik Selatan LRT station:
