Food on fire: Is this the spiciest pan mee in town?

Time to heat things up

If you’re on the lookout for a fiery gastronomical adventure, you may want to pay a visit to this stall. Operated by Ms Jim, it serves up possibly one of the spiciest versions of pan mee out there, making it an absolute delight for those who relish setting their tongue and stomach on fire.

Located right behind SMK Seri Kembangan, this rather inconspicuous stall has become a popular lunch spot among students. As for its name, it simply goes by “Thai Pan Mee” on Google Maps.

Ms Jim, who migrated from Thailand to Malaysia 20 years ago, said that her Thai spicy broth is a favourite among locals and even claimed that it had reduced some to tears due to its intense spiciness.

“Before I prepare a bowl of pan mee, I’ll ask the customer what their preferred level of spiciness is. Every bowl is cooked to order and I will make the broth according to their request,” she said.

“Some would even request for the broth to be extra spicy. I think Malaysians enjoy the pain and pleasure the spicy broth brings.”

As for why the spicy broth leaves customers hankering for more, Ms Jim did not reveal further details but only said that it was a creation of hers and that the recipe cannot be found elsewhere, not even in Thailand.

Ms Jim, who speaks fluent Mandarin and Cantonese, told WeirdKaya that she previously owned a sewing business in Serdang when she first stepped into Malaysia but later turned to sell Thai Pan Mee when the company experienced a downturn.

“I decided to sell Thai Pan Mee, which was quite different and extraordinary compared to the rest and have been at this job for ten years.”

She also noticed that customers who preferred an extra kick in their soup were mostly younger Malaysians. “Nowadays, more Malaysians have built up a high tolerance for spiciness.”

“They will continue slurping away even when they’re drenched in sweat and have a nose red and runny from the spiciness,” she chuckled.

“My greatest joy in running the business is when I see my customers finish every drop of soup in their bowl. To witness how much they love my recipe and see their faces glow with satisfaction brings a sense of accomplishment to me.”
