GEORGETOWNÂ – Five men were detained by police after a clip showing more than 20 individuals fighting along the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway went viral on social media yesterday (Jan 26).
In the clip, a group of towing workers were seen getting into a physical fight with each other following an accident involving a lorry and two cars.
Some highway users slowed down their vehicles to look at what happened, causing congestion in both directions.
Northeast District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Soffian Santong said the fight broke out due to a misunderstanding between the workers on who had the right to tow the vehicles.
“Personnel from the district police headquarters failed in stopping the fight and the individuals who were involved in the fight fled upon the arrival of the police motorcycle unit and mobile patrol vehicles.Â
“However, we managed to arrest five locals aged between 26 to 50 and are still tracking down the rest,” he said.
Soffian also added that police confiscated several helmets and motorcycle fork locks used in the fight and will be seeking a remand order against the suspects at the Magistrate’s Court.
The case will be investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting with weapons.
