Feeling useless? This man proves “doing nothing” can be a job too

"Even being invisible like air can be useful because air is a basic need of human"

JAPAN – A Japanese guy named Morimoto Shoji created a Twitter account “A person who does not do anything” (レンタルなんもしない人). He provides renting service that does not do anything as the name suggested, only quiet accompaniment. So far, he has been listening to customer’s rant, playing Pokemon Go with a customer, staring blankly under a cherry blossom tree, gossiping, catching traitors, etc.

Despite being numb with human nature’s fickleness, he brought warmth to many people with the two years. His experience has been published into books, manga, and filmed in a Japanese drama, making him an Intellectual Property (IP). Currently, he has more than 270k followers on Twitter.

Morimoto had a bad experience in his previous job in a press. Therefore, he quit the job and started “doing nothing”. His wife was worried about it because in Japan, people who are not working need to bear high pressure from society, especially for a married man like Morimoto.

However, he did not just earn a living by not having a proper job, but also getting through social judgements and help strangers find their way out of their hectic life. He has proven that accompaniment can be meaningful and valuable as well.

At first, the “do nothing” rental service only cost Morimoto’s meal and transportation fees. He has attended almost a thousand clients within 2 years. Due to high demand recently, Morimoto is quoting 10k Japanese Yuan (equivalent to nearly RM400).

Morimoto met all kinds of clients. Things he did with his clients to bring them comfort include walking a dog, playing Pokemon Go, listening to office workers’ rants, witnessing divorce and accompanying the arrest of adultery, etc.

Among his clients, a girl left her hometown to work in Tokyo did not manage to get a job promotion after quite some time in the company. Worse still, she was bullied by her colleagues, and expelled by her employer. She hid it from her family to avoid their worry. Before leaving Tokyo, she rented Morimoto to listen to her reluctance. With Morimoto’s service, she realized there are still people who are willing to listen to her.

Recently, a Taiwanese lawyer Lv Qiu-Yuan shared Morimoto’s story on his Facebook and received 93K likes, 19K shares and 1.8K comments. He mentioned in the post that quiet accompaniment can be a great comfort too.

We are too busy to accompany others, it is also why we need accompaniment. The main emphasis of his text on Facebook is:

“Stay alive, we can accompany others, give them great wishes, especially in the year 2020. Even being invisible like air can be useful because air is a basic need of human.”
