Yesterday, we reported of a viral road rage incident which took place in Cheras, resulting in an elderly man getting grievously injured.
When the assailant, Saiful Adli Yusof, was brought to face charges of assault and making death threats against Liew Khoon Foo, he begged for leniency and told the court that he only earned RM2,000 a month as a trader.
The court eventually fined him RM5,500 in default of eight months in jail if he failed to pay the fine.
Still traumitised
However, the sentence left a bitter taste in the mouths of Liew’s family, who slammed the fine as a mere slap on the wrist.
Speaking to NST, Liew’s daughter, Cindy, said her father suffered a swollen eye and required six stitches to his tongue.

He is conscious and stable, but the shock has affected him. His appetite is not as good as before as he’s still traumitised by the incident.”
Cindy added her father went to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for treatment and was prescribed painkillers after doctors found no internal injuries.
Decries ‘light’ sentence
When asked about the court’s decision to hand Saiful a fine, Cindy said the family was deeply affected by it, adding that no compensation for medical or related losses was imposed.
“I feel the sentence is too light. I don’t want to see another motorist suffering the same fate.

“Even if my father was at fault in the accident, no one has the right to retaliate with violence. What if he had been beaten to death? Who would be responsible then?” she questioned.
Cindy also said that the sentence indirectly tells the public that resorting to violence as a means to settle issues would have little to no consequences.
“If the law is too lenient, people may think that as long as they have money, they can resort to violence and pay their way out of it.
“For wealthy individuals, they would just settle the fine and be on their way.”

Cindy urged the authorities to mete out harsher sentences in similar incidents so that it will serve as a deterrent.
The family also plans to file legal action against Saiful.
