A seemingly ordinary dinner at Tepian Tebrau food court in Johor Bahru took a spicy twist when Facebook user Ekin Cahaya uploaded her whopping RM1,260 receipt. And netizens are shook.
“Why does this receipt look like it’s from a doctor’s calligraphy writing?” Ekin quipped on her post, pointing out that many of the 12 item names were barely legible.

While some dishes ranged from RM30, others skyrocketed to RM224. Oh, and heads up, four servings of white rice? That’s RM40.

Ekin’s video has already hit over 66k views – zoomed in on the stall’s “market price” seafood menu. With a touch of disbelief in her voice, Ekin questions the justification behind the steep total for her family’s seafood meal.
In her clip, she wonders aloud, “Is RM1,260 for a seafood dinner normal now?”
Netizens have been quick to chime in. Some expressed shock, equating the prices to those found at luxury establishments.
Some JB locals argued that a larger group, especially with around 10 diners ordering substantial dishes, would naturally face a higher bill. They jestingly mentioned that unless everyone ordered just a simple ‘nasi goreng kampong with a fried egg’, the bill’s size shouldn’t be surprising.

A netizen questioned the customer’s oversight in not checking prices and verifying the bill. In defense, the customer stated that the controversial receipt was a second version, as the initial one only showed a total of RM1,250 without itemized details.

According to The Star, the Johor Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KDPN) has taken note of the controversy.
They’ve initiated an investigation into the stall’s pricing practices. Johor KDPN director, Lilis Saslinda Pornomo, mentioned potential repercussions if there’s a mismatch between displayed and charged prices.
She also emphasized that the investigation aims to unearth any attempts at unfair profiteering. The stall could face stringent actions under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 if found in violation.
