During these trying times, many graduates are constantly on the hunt for good-paying jobs. Unfortunately, a recent report showed that the minimum wage for fresh graduates has plummeted to a new low, ranging from between RM1,001 and RM1,500 last year.
As such, many are forced to work at retail stores to earn a living. However, Facebook user Nedumaran Elangovan believes that it may not necessarily be a bad thing.
In a now-viral post, he compared the benefits of working at Family Mart instead of an engineer in a Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (SME).
Here are the five major aspects he listed to support his stance:
1. Qualification
Family Mart: SPM level
SME: Engineering degree
2. Salary
Family Mart: RM1,500 plus RM150 shift allowance and overtime.
The estimated monthly take-away salary is RM 2,000 or more.
SME: Fixed salary of RM2,200
3. Requirement(s)
Family Mart: Able to read and write. SME: Must have own transport, pay for your own internet, be available 24/7 via WhatsApp, must be able to work extra hours, Mandarin proficiency is preferred.
4. Debt
Family Mart: None
Engineer: PTPTN loans of approximately RM100K.
5. Perks
Family Mart: Eating leftover Oden (probably).
Engineer: Depression and mental illness.
With these comparisons, Nedumaran concluded that Family Mart wins.

He ended the post by saying that these were the reasons why one should consider working in Family Mart rather than toiling for an engineering degree. He also thanked his readers for attending his “TED talk”.
His post sparked a heated discussion among netizens in the comment section, with some shedding some light on the engineering career.
