Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil is disappointed over the RM100 fine given to influencer Shalini Periasamy, who was involved in a cyberbullying case that led to content creator Esha’s suicide.
Fahmi Fadzil took to Twitter, saying the fine was far too lenient and called for stricter cyberbullying laws.
He believes the current punishment doesn’t match the seriousness of the crime and wants tougher penalties to prevent such incidents.
“This small fine is disappointing, but the Attorney-General’s Department says it’s based on the evidence.”

He also mentioned that Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo and Minister of Law Dato’ Seri Azaline agree that the definition of cyberbullying needs to be updated, and fines should be increased.
Many people, including other influencers on TikTok, were also upset by Shalini’s lack of remorse when she left the courthouse on July 17.
They criticized her indifferent attitude, especially given the tragic outcome of her actions.
“I’ve seen many comments from influencers and netizens who are angry not just about the fine but also about how unremorseful this offender seemed.“
“Her actions led to another influencer’s death, and this attitude is unacceptable,” Fahmi said.
“We need to work hard to strengthen our laws.”
