5 Factory Workers In Sabah Allegedly Poisoned After Inhaling Toxic Gas Released By Rotting Fish

No fatalities were reported.
A group of factory workers at a private marine product company in Sabah were allegedly poisoned after they inhaled toxic gas released by a barrel of rotting fish.

This unusual incident took place at Sepanggar, Kota Kinabalu, on Saturday (Mar 25), where it caused one of the workers to pass out, reported Sinar Daily.

5 workers poisoned by toxic gas released by rotting fish

According to Kota Kinabalu Fire and Rescue station (BBP) chief Ordine Gilu, the team received a distress call at 8.26pm and 15 personnel were dispatched to the scene.

When they arrived, they found a barrel filled with rotting fish which was emitting toxic gas and caused the factory workers to be poisoned.

One of the workers named Jirol Carumpi was found unconscious at the scene by four other colleagues, Jolito Araza, Riswan, Muhammad Mufli, and Shahril.

All five of them were immediately ushered out of the premise, where Jirol was given medical attention on the ambulance while on the way to the hospital.

As for the other four workers, Gilu said they were sent to the hospital by the Emergency Services Assistance Unit (ERMS) and Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM).

“The Hazardous Materials Unit team (Hazmat) later conducted checks at the compound to trace Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) but found no chemical substances,” he said, adding that the operation came to an end at 10.08pm.

All five factory workers are also reportedly in a stable condition.
