Durians are undeniably the pride and joy of all Malaysians as this pungent yet irresistible ‘King of Fruits’ can be found in most parts of the country and has become an icon both nationally and internationally.
As such, you can imagine how riled up Malaysians were when a Facebook page listed the fruit as the national fruit of not only Malaysia, but Singapore as well.
Durian named as Singapore’s national fruit
In a poster titled ‘National Fruits of Countries in Southeast Asia’ shared by ASEAN Skyline on its Facebook page on Aug 17, it showed a total of eight countries along with the fruit(s) known to be its national fruit.
When it came to durian, a total of three countries had it as their national fruit, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, and most surprisingly Singapore.

Here’s the full list of national fruits which were accredited to the eight countries:
- Malaysia: Durian or Papaya
- Myanmar: Cucumber Tree (Averrhoa Bilimbi)
- Thailand: Mangosteen
- Vietnam: Dragon Fruit
- Indonesia: Durian
- Singapore: Durian
- Philippines: Mango
- Cambodia: Chicken Egg Banana
‘Didn’t know S’pore grew durians’
Naturally, the poster didn’t sit well with Malaysians, who wasted little time in mocking it for saying that durian was Singapore’s national fruit.
‘Singapore plants durians on top of the roof. How would y’all know? If you don’t believe it go see it for yourself.’

‘Where is (the) durian farm in Singapore? On top of their apartments?’

‘The best durians from Singapore comes from Segamat, Pagoh, and Raub. Not far from Woodlands MRT Station.’
