[UPDATED] 21yo M’sian Man Rams Car Into Istana Negara Barrier Gate After Making A Wrong Turn While Drunk

He's expected to be charged in court today.
A local man found himself on the wrong side of the law after he crashed his car into a bollard pole and a barrier gate at Gate 2 of Istana Negara early this morning.

Following the accident, the man was arrested by police for driving under the influence.

Made wrong turn before crash

According to The Star and NST, the incident took place at around 3.30am along Jalan Changkat Semantan.

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the 21-year-old driver was travelling from the direction of Bukit Damansara prior to the crash.

He then made a wrong turn and subsequently rammed into Istana Negara’s bollard pole and barrier gate at Gate 2.

While no injuries were reported, the front of the Toyota Vios and security installations at the gate were damaged.

Driver found to be drunk

Mohd Zamzuri said police later arrived at the scene and carried out investigations. They also reviewed CCTV footage and recorded the driver’s statement.

A breathlyser test was also carried out on the driver, where his blood alcohol content was 166 milligrams per 100 millilitres, which is above the permitted limit.

Pleaded not guilty

The driver, M. Kajen, was charged under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 at the KL Magistrate’s Court today, which he pleaded not guilty to.

If found guilty, he faces a maximum fine of RM10,000, up to five years in jail, being disqualified from holding a driving licence for up to five years.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Shazwan Hasifi Shahrun offered bail of RM10,000 but Kajen asked for a lower amount, saying he was pursuing his degree and did not come from a high-income family.
