‘Don’t Leave With No Backup Plan’ —M’sian Warns Those Rushing To Ditch ‘Toxic’ Workplace

"It's not wrong to resign. Plan your exit properly."
People leave their jobs for multiple reasons—insufferable bosses and colleagues, career stagnation, or better salaries being offered elsewhere.

While leaving one’s job is part and parcel of working life, a Malaysian has a warning for those looking to quit without a Plan B: don’t until you have one.

‘Not recommended’

In a Threads post, the OP wrote that he noticed more and more people quitting their jobs with no backup plan as of late.

He added that speaking from his experience after undergoing a 15-month “career break”, he said doing so should be the last thing on one’s list.

As someone who went through a 15-month career break, I wouldn’t recommend it as the stress of working and the stress of being unemployed are two completely different things.

“At least when you’re still employed, you receive a salary at the end of the month to cover your commitments. Job seekers, meanwhile, spend every month wondering how they’re going to survive.

“There’s nothing wrong with resigning. Just plan your exit properly,” he advised.

The OP also suggested that one should continue to update their resume and start applying for jobs while they plan for their exit plan, not after they submit their resignation letter.

Reactions

A handful of netizens agreed with the OP’s advice, saying that resigning with no backup plan can only be afforded by those who come from privileged backgrounds.

They also said one should start building their savings up and cut back spending on indulgent items such as coffee and dessert.

However, a netizen said sometimes one is forced to leave without a backup plan and that planning an exit plan may not be easy for certain people.
