Dogs are often dubbed as “man’s best friend”, but unfortunately there are some owners who don’t feel the same way about their canine companions.
Netizens were recently shocked and angered by a clip which showed a dog bleeding profusely after it was chained to the back of a car and dragged along the road in Lukut, Port Dickson.
Dog found chained and dragged on the road in Port Dickson
A poultry farmer named Rajes Donarow, who was an eyewitness to the incident, told The Star that he was enjoying a cup of tea outside his home last Saturday (May 27) when he saw the dog being dragged behind a vehicle.
He said the driver was a durian farm owner from the same village and drove along the gavel road with the dog chained to the back and pulled along.
“The dog’s paws were all bleeding and the dog had collapsed and the gravel was also scraping its chest while the man continued driving,” he said.
Driver confronted by eyewitness
Unable to see the dog suffering any longer, Rajes gave chase to the driver on his motorbike and asked him to stop. However, the latter ignored him and continued driving.
Eventually, Rajes managed to overtake the driver, blocked his path and yanked the keys out of the ignition, putting a stop to his escape.
I asked him why he was dragging the dog in such a cruel manner instead of using the lorry or four-wheel drive that he owned.
“He then told me that he was moving the dog to another plantation and claimed that it refused to get onto the lorry,” he said.
However, that claim was quickly debunked when Rajes unchained the dog and the creature immediately jumped into the lorry.
As passersby began to crowd around, Rajes contacted the police, who later told him and the driver to lodge police reports.
Police also urged Rajes to file a report with the Department of Veterinary Services.
Owner arrested for dog’s death
Tragically, the dog did not survive and eventually succumbed to its injuries, reported Bernama.
Port Dickson district police chief Superintendent Aidi Sham Mohamed said the dog’s 61-year-old owner has been arrested and was remanded for a day.
The case is currently being probed under Section 428 of the Penal Code for animal abuse, which carries a jail term of up to three years, a fine, or both if convicted.
